『金Kin』『銀Gin』『銅Dou』ーabout Kanji and radicalsー

Kanji can be divided into several parts. These parts have the same shape and are called “部首(Busyu)”. “部首(Busyu)” of the same shape often represent the same meaning. Kanji with “金” as ”部首(Busyu)” The first place winner at the Olympics receives a 『金(Kin)』=『gold』 medal. So what medals do the second and third place finishers get? The second-place finisher will receive a 『銀(Gin)』=『silver』 medal, and the third-place finisher will receive a 『銅(Dou)』=『bronze』 medal. Both of these kanji have the radical ”部首(Busyu)”『金』. This radical is called “Kane-hen”. The word “kane” represents money. To answer these questions, let me tell you about overview of Japanese hiragana, katakana and kanji. Why are there three types of script in Japanese? Japan has a long history, so does Japanese writing system. First, there were only kanji in Japanese writing. Kanji were imported into Japan from China around 5th century. Since then, Kanji have been used to write official documents. However, as kanji were too hard to learn for ordinary people, simplified version started to be used among people. The simplified kanji were phonetic, representing only sounds. They gradually developed into hiragana and katakana. Why are hiragana/katakana all different in shape?
